Section Worcester to Laingsburg
Distance 156 km
Description Single carriageway with paved shoulders. The road through Hex River Pass is a four-lane dual carriageway (four km) with an arrestor bed in the south-bound direction before the hairpin curve known as "Spookdraai". Stopping places are provided at regular intervals.
Condition of Road Good
Comments Construction works are progress between Worcester and De Doorns. Motorist will encounter traffic control by means of Stop/Go measures during the day and traffic signal units at night. Waiting periods of up to 15 minutes can be expected. Construction work is also in progress between Touwsriver and Laingsburg. Motorists can encountered up to four manually and traffic-light controlled Stop/Go sections with waiting periods of up to 15 minutes. A compulsory stop, manned by the Provincial Traffic Department, is in operation five km south of Touws River. An unmanned compulsory stop for heavy vehicles is also in operation on the south-bound carriageway in Hex River Pass. Motorists should also be alert to pedestrians and/or stray animals just north of De Doorns. Motorists should also be alert to hawkers selling alongside the road. It is illegal to stop and buy from the sellers.

Section Durban to Cedara (Hilton)
Distance 85 km
Description This entire section is a multi-laned dual carriageway. The first four km out of Durban carries heavy traffic with up to 5 lanes in each direction. Repairs to the asphalt pavement between Mariannhill Toll Plaza and Key Ridge are scheduled to commence from June 2007. Traffic will be accommodated in 2-lanes in each direction, with single lanes during night work and on Sundays. Two closures up to 5kms on the northbound carriageway and one closure up to 4kms on the southbound carriageway can be expected. Repairs to the concrete panels and joint sealing are due to commence in April 2007 between Key Ridge and Cato Ridge. Traffic will be accommodated in 2 –lanes in each direction. Closures up to 2km can be expected in each direction. Motorists to be aware that reduced speed limits of 60 km/hr are to be imposed at all work sections. The next 40 km, up to Cato Ridge, has 3 lanes in each direction with wide paved shoulders. The section between Cato Ridge and the end of the Pietermaritzburg Bypass (33 km) has a two-lane plus paved shoulder configuration, except on steep gradients to the east of Pietermaritzburg where climbing lanes are provided. Upgrading of the New England Road Interchange on the Pietermaritaburg Bypass is planned to commence in May 2007 until March 2008. While majority of the work will be on the cross road, there will be restricted traffic speed limits of 60km/hr as well as restricted height clearance during the bridge construction on the N3. The final 14 km to Howick incorporates the notorious, steeply graded Town Hill, which has 3 lanes with paved shoulders in each direction

National Route N3 (N3 Toll Concession Route)
Section Cedara to Heidelberg
Distance 415 km
Description This section of road is a public private partnership between SANRAL and the N3Toll Concession (Pty) Ltd. This toll route is a four-lane dual carriageway road between Cedara and the Tugela Toll Plaza. From the Tugela Toll Plaza to Wilge Toll Plaza, the road is a four-lane single carriageway with paved shoulders of varying width. The section between the Tugela Toll Plaza and Warden is an unlimited access road with at-grade intersections. The remainder of the road between Villiers and Heidelberg is a four-lane dual carriageway with wide-paved shoulders.
Condition of Road Good
Comments Current Construction works include: (i) Rehabilitation works between Warden and Villiers. Expected completion is September 2007. (ii) Resealing between Harrismith and Warden. Expected completion is May 2007. (iii) Concrete repairs between the Tugela Toll Plaza and the Sand River. Expected completion is June 2007. (iv) Rehabilitation works between Howick and Estcourt. Expected completion is September 2007. (v) Ongoing routine road maintenance. Through the construction zones, traffic may be restricted to one lane in each direction under reduced speed. During certain peak traffic periods, all four lanes will be open to traffic.

The rehabilitation of the section between Senekal and Vaalpensspruit (halfway towards Winburg) will commence in April 2007 with a 23-month contract duration. Stop/Go conditions with speed restrictions will be operation during this period.

Description Predominantly, a two-lane single carriageway. The 29 km section between Kimberley and Perdeberg has paved shoulders, while the final eight km immediately adjacent to Bloemfontein is a four-lane dual carriageway with wide paved shoulders. The remainder of the road has gravel shoulders.
Condition of Road Good.
Comments At the Kaalspruit River (approximately 40kms from Bloemfontein) a new bridge as well as approach roadworks are being constructed. Traffic will be diverted onto a two km-long bypass.
Duration of Work January 2006 to June 2007.

Description The first five km from Bloemfontein is a four-lane dual carriageway with wide paved shoulders. Between Bloemfontein and Thaba Nchu there are alternating passing and climbing lanes. Between Thaba Nchu and Maseru is a two-lane single carriageway road with shoulders of varying width.
Condition of Road Fair to good.
Comments Patching teams are active on the section between Thaba Nchu and Ladybrand.
