 International Driving Permit

The Automobile Association urges drivers intending to travel abroad to ensure that their driver’s licence (credit card format) is valid for the duration of their journey and they also recommend making use of an International Driving Permit (IDP) to support this.

IDP's are issued in South Africa by the Automobile Association in terms of the International Conventions relating to Motor Traffic. The IDP is a legal document, which endorses a South African licence and allows for the translation of the licence to be read and understood in several languages.

Although they are recognized internationally, IDP holders must carry their valid drivers licences (credit card format – CCF) when travelling abroad.

IDP’s are available to permanent and temporary South African residents who hold a valid South African  driver’s licence. However, an IDP cannot be used in the country of issue.

One does not need to be an AA member to obtain and IDP.

Although some car hire companies consider the IDP to be superfluous, they do assist motorists in foreign countries, particularly in the event of an accident where insurance claims will be handled.

The IDP may be issued at any AA retail outlet on receipt of the following:
• Completed application form
• Payment of a fee of R110.00
• 2 photographs (available at the AA retail outlet at a fee of R35.00 for four photographs)
• Presentation of a valid South African driver’s licence (Credit Card Format)  (CCF)
• Presentation of a valid South African identity document
